Mark: Twaalf jaar struinde ik met de camera door de Noordoostpolder, de streek van mijn jeugd, ooit gepland als het perfecte land. Uit dromen en klei groeide een fotoboek: ‘Polderlichaam – jongensjaren in de Noordoostpolder’.

Growing up and becoming aware of your dreams and longings, do you fit in with your surroundings – or do you find your own path? These emotional questions linger in the photos of a Dutch polder and its youth. For twelve years I worked on this project and photographed the countryside I grew up in. The result is a cycle of picture poems.
As both a graphic designer and a photographer, I am interested in visual literacy, in the ways a sequence of images acquires meaning without the use of words. In this project I did not work in a linear way (e.g. theme > photography > selecting > book design). Instead, it was a to and fro between wandering around in the region with my camera and mentally traveling in my studio: skeching, trying out how different image combinations evoke different feelings, re-living memories from my youth.
‘Accidentally’ made photos suggested themes and storylines. Themes that lingered on asked for certain photos to be made. And vice versa. I call each chapter a ‘picture poem’ because photography and design are in various ways closely intermingled to create layers of meaning – open to each viewer.

Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft een serie foto’s aangekocht voor de ambassade in Indonesië. Aanleiding was de expositie ‘We want it darker’ in Galerie Artkitchen, waar naast inkttekeningen ook een aantal beelden uit Polderlichaam werden getoond (mei 2018).
Fotograaf Robbert Bodegraven en ik houden een lezing over fotografie en mystiek in Haarlem, georganiseerd door uitgever Hapé Smeele (nov 2016).
LHBT-jongerenorganisatie Expreszo vertoont een beeldselectie uit Polderlichaam: hoe is het om als homojongere op te groeien in de polder? Bekijk hier.
‘Verhalen vertellen met fotosequenties’ is het thema van mijn lezing voor de Nafva, de Nederlandse Amateur Fotografen Vereniging Amsterdam (sept 2015).
Fotofestival Naarden presenteert Polderlichaam in een ruimte in oude vestingwal op speciaal door mij ontworpen beeldtafels (mei-juni 2015). Ook de pocketeditie wordt gepresenteerd tijdens Fotofestival Naarden.

Aan de beeldredactie en de fysieke vorm van Polderlichaam had ik lang gewerkt. Bij de exposities die volgden, wilde ik verder gaan dan de gangbare presentatiewijze met losse foto’s naast elkaar op een muur. Hoe kan het boek zélf een ruimtelijk kunstwerk worden?
Fotofestival Naarden bood me de kans om mijn ontwerpideeën door te ontwikkelen. Polderlichaam behelst een bundeling van zeven katernen die hier los op zeven beeldtafels worden getoond. In een cirkelvorm, of eigenlijk een achthoek met één open zijde waardoor je de cirkel binnenloopt.
Naast de Naardense boektafels ontwikkelde ik de afgelopen jaren een aantal andere vormen om een boek ruimtelijk te ervaren.
